A 20-Year Tradition of Joy: Farmingdale State Lacrosse Delivers Holiday Magic

The holiday spirit was in full swing this week in Bohemia as the Farmingdale State College (FSC) Men’s Lacrosse Team celebrated a major milestone. For the 20th consecutive year, these dedicated student-athletes visited the People’s Arc of Suffolk Educare Center to hand-deliver holiday gifts and cheer to local elementary students.

This annual tradition has become a cornerstone for the team, providing people in the Long Island community—specifically children living with intellectual and developmental disabilities—with a day of celebration they won’t soon forget.

More Than Just a Game

For the players, the work begins long before they arrive at the school. The team raises the funds themselves, shops for the gifts, and spends time wrapping each one to ensure every child has something special to open.

This year’s event featured:

  • A Visit from Santa: The guest of honor arrived to hand out presents personally.

  • Festive Atmosphere: The school was filled with holiday music and treats.

  • Community Connection: Athletes spent time interacting with students, sharing smiles and holiday magic.

Lessons Beyond the Field

FSC Lacrosse Coach Sean Chamberlain has seen the impact of this tradition grow over two decades. “We came here 20 years ago and saw what the staff and the teachers were doing with the kids and thought it was amazing,” Chamberlain noted. He emphasized that the experience is deeply rewarding for the athletes, helping them gain perspective on the challenges others face and the importance of giving back.

Supporting a Vital Mission

The People’s Arc of Suffolk Educare Center provides essential services for people aged 3 to 21. Their programs are designed for students with diverse intellectual, developmental, and medical needs, utilizing specialized approaches like:

  • Multisensory environments

  • Physical Therapy

  • Music and Movement programs

Dana Schillinger, VP of Children’s Services for People’s Arc of Suffolk, highlighted how much the visit means to the students. “Having Santa in your school giving you presents is an even more thrilling experience,” she said, noting that every child deserves the excitement and wonder this event provides.
