Children and Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Get Up Close Look At Vehicles, Hardware and Personnel that Keeps Long Islanders Safe
Bohemia, NY (July 22, 2026) – The Suffolk County Police Department ES team made a special visit to the People’s Arc of Suffolk Educare Center here today, allowing students and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to get an up-close look at the People and hardware that keeps Long Island residents safe.
Joining the Educare Center students for the event were participants from People’s Arc of Suffolk’s nearby Bohemia Adult Day Habilitation program, who walked over to take part in the interactive experience.
Members of the ES showed off their Emergency Service Truck, as well as a remote-controlled four-wheeler drone, armored vests and radios, and a 40 lb. tactical shield. Children and adults got a chance to climb into the rear of the truck, sit in the driver’s seat, and handle the equipment that SWAT officers use on a daily basis.
Participants were also able to meet two of the SWAT team members to increase their comfort level with uniformed personnel who might respond to an emergency in their future.
“It’s great to have community members come to our school to build that relationship for them,” said Dana Schillinger, VP of Children’s Services at People’s Arc of Suffolk. “That way they’re not scared of them if one day there’s an emergency and they need to ask for help.”
The visit was organized by the Office of Congressman Andrew Garbarino.
The Seiff Sweet Shop was also open during the visit, giving attendees the chance to enjoy treats as part of the special day. The sweet shop is a student and classroom run coffee and treat shop inside the school.
The People’s Arc of Suffolk Educare Center offers education and therapeutic services to students ages 5 to 21 with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Through an innovative blend of academics, therapies, and community integration, the school empowers students to reach their highest potential in a supportive and nurturing environment.
