History

Over 70 years ago, families of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities faced a very different world. Understanding of their challenges was limited, and options outside full-time parental care were scarce. Society often shunned these families, public education largely ignored them, and professional assistance was mostly available in institutions that provided little help and even less hope.

In 1949, a small group of determined parents founded AHRC, driven by the belief that every person, regardless of intellectual ability, deserves to live with dignity, learn with pride, and work toward their highest potential.

Today, the People’s Arc of Suffolk, formerly known as AHRC Suffolk, a chapter of The Arc New York, has grown from a handful of volunteers into one of the region’s most trusted organizations. We are a leading advocate for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and their families.

Our comprehensive range of programs and services includes educational programs, day habilitation services, community residences, and employment opportunities both on and off premises. These are delivered by our experienced and caring staff.

At its heart, People’s Arc of Suffolk is still very much a family. We are a community of parents, educators, healthcare professionals, volunteers, business partners, and supporters united by a shared goal: to provide a life of opportunity for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

We invite you to join our family and share in our vision for the future.
