PEOPLE’S ARC OF SUFFOLK HOSTS OPWDD COMMISSIONER WILLOW BAER FOR HIGH-ENERGY VISIT HIGHLIGHTING SELF-ADVOCACY, EMPLOYMENT, AND COMMUNITY

Bohemia, NY (Jan 26, 2026) – People’s Arc of Suffolk welcomed Willow Baer, Commissioner of the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) for a dynamic, hands-on visit that showcased the organization’s mission in action and centered the voices of the people it supports.

The high-energy morning began with an interactive karate class, where Commissioner Baer and her staff, Michelle Torres and Wilfrid Chou, joined participants from People’s Arc’s Day Habilitation program on the mat, an experience that underscored inclusion, engagement, and mutual respect.

“I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to see the impact of these programs personally,” said Commissioner Baer. “People’s Arc of Suffolk amplifies the work we want to see done throughout the state as we continue to focus together on advocacy, access to support and quality outcomes.”

A tour of the organization’s main building was led by self-advocates Caleb and Veronica, who shared their personal experiences and offering an authentic, first-hand look at how People’s Arc programs support independence, confidence, and community connection.

“I was so nervous about the tour but that was fun!” said Caleb, reflecting the excitement and pride of leading state officials through the space.

The visit concluded at People’s Arc’s Sayville location, where self-advocate, Jaime and the people supported at the site hosted a warm and welcoming reception. “You are all welcome back anytime,” Jamie said, echoing the spirit of hospitality and community that defines People’s Arc’s programs.

The visit was especially meaningful in highlighting the lived experiences of both the people People’s Arc supports and the people it employs—demonstrating how inclusive, person-centered services translate into real-world impact.

“This visit was about more than showcasing our programs,” said Mary Fu, Chief Advancement Officer for People’s Arc of Suffolk. “It was about elevating the voices of self-advocates, celebrating authentic engagement, and demonstrating what’s possible when state leadership and community organizations connect in meaningful ways.”
