Kids with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Celebrate their achievements with Family and Friends
Bohemia, NY (June 13, 2025) — People’s Arc of Suffolk proudly hosted its annual graduation ceremony for students at its Educare Center in Bohemia here today, celebrating the academic and personal achievements of students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The event marked a joyful conclusion to the school year for students, families, and staff.
More than a dozen students with intellectual and developmental disabilities — ranging in age from preschool to 22 years old — were honored for completing their educational journey. Families, teachers, and program staff came together to recognize the accomplishments of each graduate during a heartfelt ceremony that featured speeches, certificates, and a festive reception.
“They deserve every type of normalcy in this incredible journey they are on because it is such a unique and different journey that they have,” said Dana Schillinger, Director of Curriculum & Instruction at the People’s Arc of Suffolk Educare Center. “They’re not in a public school where they may be a number. They are family here and we are here to help them, support them and help them grow.”
The People’s Arc of Suffolk Educare Center provides a comprehensive blend of academic instruction, therapy services, and life skills education tailored to students ages 5–21. The graduation ceremony underscored the organization’s mission to prepare every student for continued growth—whether additional education, employment, or participation in adult programs.
The graduation ceremony continued a season of celebration and recognition for People’s Arc. Earlier this spring, the organization was honored with Suffolk County’s “Champion of Diversity” award, and its performing arts and prom programs have received media attention for creating inclusive spaces where individuals with disabilities can thrive.
