Dancing Through the Magic: An Enchanted Garden Prom at People’s Arc of Suffolk

On Friday, June 6, the gym at the People’s Arc of Suffolk Educare Center in Bohemia was transformed into a glowing, flower-filled haven as students gathered for an unforgettable evening: the 2025 Prom, themed “Enchanted Garden.”

More than 30 students from 10th, 11th, and 12th grades celebrated the end of the school year with music, dancing, and joy alongside their families, friends, and educators. Dressed to the nines in gowns, suits, and radiant smiles, the students lit up the room — some gliding across the dance floor on foot, others in beautifully decorated wheelchairs, all with the same goal: to celebrate together.

The space came alive thanks to the dedication of teachers and volunteers who poured love into every detail, from the vibrant décor to the sensory-friendly setup. A local DJ donated his time and talents, ensuring the music matched the energy and excitement in the room.

“Our children deserve to have every experience that their counterparts in the district have,” said Andrea Nickdow, Vice President of Children’s Services at People’s Arc of Suffolk. “A prom is a part of that. It’s a special social event — a time to get out and play and have fun with their peers. They’ve been talking about who’s going to wear what and matching with their friends. They might not even use words to communicate it, but you can tell they’re excited.”

The prom is more than a party — it’s a powerful expression of inclusion, dignity, and joy for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

“This event is a shining example of how People’s Arc of Suffolk creates inclusive, empowering experiences for those they support every day,” said Dana Schillinger, Director of Curriculum and Instruction at the Educare Center.

The Educare Center serves students aged 5 to 21, offering not only education but comprehensive therapeutic services tailored to each student’s needs. Events like this prom underscore the agency’s commitment to making sure each student is seen, celebrated, and supported in every season of life.

As the music faded and the final photos were snapped, one thing was clear: the memories made at this prom will last far beyond the night — in the hearts of every student, teacher, and family member who got to be part of the magic.
